Plant tours, speakers, software tutorials highlight fall INFORMS meeting

The INFORMS Fall 1996 Meeting, scheduled for Nov. 3-6 in Atlanta, will offer once-in-a-lifetime programs and experiences. Meeting and hotel registration forms appeared in the special supplement mailed with the August issue of OR/MS Today. For further information, call 1-800-343-0062 or (401) 274-2525.

The meeting will feature plant tours, plenary sessions and software tutorials and workshops along with the presentation of hundreds of scientific papers in 30 different tracks. Highlights include:

Plant Tours
Have you ever wanted a first-hand look at the state-of-the-art production of a Ford Taurus or the manufacture of fiber optic cable? Attendees are invited to tour Ford Motor Company's assembly plant or the Lucent Technologies' cable manufacturing plant. If logistics is your thing, check out United Parcel Service's central sorting facility. Attendees can also tour the Worldspan Data Center as well as the Delta Air Lines Technical Operations Center. Individuals interested in the tours are encouraged to sign up in advance since space is limited. Call the numbers listed above for details.

Speakers
Jim Kelly, chief operations officers for UPS, and George Gourlay, senior vice president for Coca-Cola, will address the meeting's logistics theme in a pair of plenary sessions.

Keynote speaker William Pierskalla, dean of UCLA's Anderson Graduate School of Management, will discuss health care delivery systems, while Jonathan Rosenhead of the London School of Economics will address OR/MS involvement in political issues.

In a special encore presentation, the 1996 Edelman winners will tell the amazing story of how OR/MS methods were used to completely design the South African National Defense Force.

Software Tutorials and Workshops
Meeting registrants are invited to attend more than a dozen tutorials in the latest analytical software. See the schedule or call the numbers listed above for details. While the tutorials are free to meeting participants, the workshops require an application fee to cover materials and instructors.
