IFORS Prize for OR in Development

IFORS is pleased to continue the tradition of the IFORS Prize for OR in Development to be awarded at the close of the 2002 IFORS Triennial Conference in Edinburgh, Scotland, July 8-12, 2002. A grand prize of $2,000 and a runner-up of $1,000 will be presented. Entries selected as finalists are automatically reviewed for publication in the International Transactions in Operational Research, an IFORS publication.

The Prize Committee welcomes all entries meeting the following criteria:
  • The paper describes a practical OR application in a developing country, conducted to assist a specific organization in its decision-making process with original features in methodology or implementation.

  • Principal authors and presenters should be nationals of a developing country.

  • If selected to be among the finalists, the entry should be presented in person by one of the principal authors during the IFORS Triennial Conference in Edinburgh on July 8, 2002 to July 12, 2002.

  • The paper includes some description of the applications social context and its impact on the decision-making process or on the organization for which it was conducted. Where appropriate, the relevance of the country's state of development to the study is addressed. A stress on developmental issues will be a factor.

  • Length of the paper does not exceed 25 pages (one-and-a-half spaced). Papers exceeding 25 pages will be rejected.
Winners will be selected on the basis of problem definition, creativity and appropriateness of approach, MS/OR content, paper organization and structure, impact of the study, stress on developmental issues and quality of written and (if selected as finalist) oral presentation.

All contestants may send by e-mail or by post, a copy (two copies, if by post) of their paper along with their names, affiliations, nationality, full mailing address, e-mail address, telephone and fax numbers to: Prof. Goutam Dutta, Chair, IFORS-2002 OR for Development Prize, Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad 380015, India; e-mail: goutam@iimahd.ernet.in; tel.: 91-79-6307241 ext. 4828 (O) 5016 (H); fax: 91-79-630 6896.

Reverse Convex Optimization

"Reverse Convex Optimization: Algorithms and Applications," a special edited volume, will be published by Kluwer Academic Publishers and will appear in the Kluwer's "Nonconvex Optimization and Its Applications" NOIA series. The book will be a collection of self-contained chapters. Its primary goal is to present a collection of both classical as well as most recent approaches in the area of reverse convex optimization. Emphasis is also given to real world applications. It may also cover other aspects of reverse convex optimization such as complexity and equivalent problems, existence and complementarity conditions, local techniques and heuristics, exact algorithms and applications. This volume will be edited by Dr. Khosrow Moshirvaziri, Dr. Mahyar A. Amouzegar and Dr. Stephen E. Jacobsen.

Send submissions on substantial, original research in the areas mentioned above by March 1, 2001 to: Dr. Khosrow Moshirvaziri (moshir@csulb.edu); Department of Information Systems, California State University, Long Beach, Calif., 90840-8506.

Deadline to submit completed work is June 30, 2001.

IMA Journal of Management Mathematics

The IMA Journal of Management Mathematics is a quarterly, peer-reviewed journal, publishing in selected areas of operational research and management science. Preference is given to papers that fall into the following subject areas:
  • financial modeling & risk analysis;

  • model building & model optimization (both stochastic and deterministic);

  • production processes;

  • logistics & supply chain management; and

  • decision making tools.
Preference is also given to papers that contain mathematics that is innovative or original in the context of genuine applications to real problems. Three copies of each manuscript should be sent to one of the editors, together with the originals and two photocopies of any illustrations. The editors: R.C.H. Cheng, University of Southampton, Department of Mathematics, Southampton, SO17 1BJ, UK; e-mail: rchc@maths.soton.ac.uk; A.H. Christer, Centre of OR & Applied Statistics, School of Accounting, Economics & Management Science, University of Salford, Salford, M5 4WT. U.K., e-mail: A.H. Christer@salford.ac.uk.

Special Issue on Information Systems and Agile Manufacturing

The application of information technology/information systems (IT/IS) is one of the major enablers of achieving agility in manufacturing. The demand for flexibility and responsiveness is strengthened by the fact of ever increasing trade over Internet. This highlights the need for suitable information technology and systems to support agility in organizations in order for them to compete in the 21st century global markets. The real challenge for the IT/IS and operations management researchers is in developing a framework for developing suitable IT/IS systems for agile manufacturing (AM), implementation of such a framework and its performance evaluation.

Encouraged by the need to focus on IT/IS in AM, a special issue of the International Journal of Agile Manufacturing (IJAM) has been proposed. The nature of the papers could be theoretical or practical, based on surveys or case studies.

Submit four copies of the full paper by March 31, 2001, to one of the guest editors: Suresh P. Sethi, Ashbel Smith Professor of Operations Management, School of Management, The University of Texas at Dallas, Box 830688, Mail Station JO4.7, Richardson, TX 75083-0688; tel: (972) 883-6245; fax: (972) 883-2089; e-mail: sethi@utdallas.edu or Dr. A. Gunasekaran, Department of Management, E.P.
