April 1998 Call for Papers: IIE Transactions on Operations Engineering Special Issue The ongoing revolution in information and computer technologies has changed the role of industrial engineers. Not only do they have to deal with the design, planning and control of production systems; they also have to deal with similar problems in the service industries. This is true since efficient design, planning and control in telecommunications, transportation, logistics, health care, and distribution systems are playing increasingly more prominent roles in maintaining national and international competitiveness. This special issue of IIE Transactions on Operations Engineering intends to present the state-of-the-art applications of probability and statistics in the design, planning and control of production and service systems. Papers are invited that exemplify these methodologies in the context of operations and engineering problems found in both the manufacturing and service sectors. All papers will be refereed. MORS will offer two prizes for best papers - the Barchi Prize and the Rist Prize. The David Rist Prize will be awarded to the best paper in military operations research. The Richard H. Barchi Prize will be awarded to the best paper from the entire 66th MORS Symposium, including Working Groups, Composite Groups and Special Sessions. The deadlines for entry submission for the Rist Prize and the Barchi Prize are Sept. 30 and Nov. 28, respectively. Entries must meet the following critieria: The paper must be original and a self-contained contribution to systems analysis or operations research. It must demonstrate an application of analysis or methodology, either actual or prospective. The paper must prove recognizable insight into the problem or its solution; and The paper must not have previously been awarded either the Rist Prize or the Barchi Prize (the same paper may compete for, but cannot receive, both prizes). The Computers and Operations Research Journal will publish a special issue on neural networks with emphasis on their applications to business problems. Despite the growing interest, the majority of the existing literature is focused on the issue of software development and theory, rather than on applications. This special issue will focus on the use of the various tools of neural networks in solutions to business problems faced by the practitioner. Examples of the subject matter include: A comparison of neural networks with alternative approaches to solve various business problems. Application papers (i.e. actual or potential applications of various neural network approaches to problems of specific interest to the business and OR community). Transportation Science Issue on Planning & Operational Control in Mass Transit Public mass transit has become one of the critical ingredients for success, with respect to economic as well as ecological performance in highly populated conurbations. During the last two decades, operations research methods played a major role in solving the complex problems of planning and operational control in public transit organizations. Many of those activities have focused on classical scheduling problems, but now related fields of research are also becoming more and more relevant, especially in a world of continuous change. Based on the idea of looking at public transit not only as the technical problem to providing mobility but more as a specific public service in competition with motorized individual transport, efficient organizational arrangements and technological innovations, for example, must be taken into consideration.
